PS5 Pushing Haptic Feedback Feature in DualSense Controller Hard

Besides the graphics, a new console must have -- not a gimmick, but something to make it stand out from the competitors. For Playstation, this lies in their controllers. PS3 had the gyroscope built into the DualShock 3 that allowed you to balance when walking over logs in-game, and that's pretty much all it allowed you to do. The DualShock 4 has the touchpad that did bring more innovation from developers; Ghost of Tsushima using the wind to show you where to go after sliding a finger across the touchpad and Tearaway using it to cut, fold, and craft paper within the game.

Playstation's newest controller, the DualSense, was shown off a couple days ago with developers of PS5's most anticipated games detailing just what this bad boy is capable of. Many commented about how impactful the feature was. Astro's Playhouse's Nicolas Doucet said, "I tried turning haptic feedback off once, and could not believe how much I missed it." Others have said it's something that increases immersion and lets the player be one with the game. You can feel what direction enemies are attacking from. You can feel that twig break under your foot. You can feel the weight of the sword in your hands. But how are these devs using it in their games?

Spider-Man: Miles Morales will utilize Haptic Feedback by letting electricity charge and zap from the left side to the right of the controller, allowing you to feel the flow of volts all the way through. Deathloop will lock down triggers as your gun jams in the middle of fire-fights, informing your brain of just how fucked you are in ways never done before. Godfall makes it easier to keep track of what weapon you are currently slicing enemies down with by making every weapon actually feel unique through the controller.

This is a surprisingly deep and very fascinating feature, that so long as it's continued to be taken advantage of by developers, could cause some real trouble for Xbox. Microsoft's best hope is for innovation in Playstation's first-parties dying off like they had done in the past, but only time will tell who comes out on top.
